Robert Whitehead established a torpedo factory on Portland harbour near Ferrybridge. He died in 1905 but the firm continued, now owned by Vickers and Armstrong-Whitworth.
The Whitehead Torpedo Factory was sold in 1989 and the site used for desirable housing. Incidentally, in 1912 George Whitehead’s great granddaughter, Marguerite, met and married Austrian submarine commander Captain von Trapp, the father of the singing family in the Julie Andrews film “The Sound of Music”. Although Whitehead received honours from many countries, his work was never recognised with any honour in Great Britain.
